IDEAS Introduction

IDEAS is the acronym for Innovations and Development in Enterprise Assistance Scheme. IDEAS combines a challenge fund with technical advice, both provided by SPEED Ghana.

Nowadays, projects eligible for support from IDEAS are identified based on the assessment of BDS markets in focused value-chains, i.e. tourism, wood products, natural plant products, garment & textile, and ICT (information and communication technology). These market assessments result in the formulation by SPEED Ghana of a wide range of concept notes. Through an open or restricted tendering procedure partner organizations are selected, preferably multiple-partners that address key issues in the value-chains as formulated in these concept notes.

The support scheme of SPEED Ghana under IDEAS may include the following:

  • Technical Advice from national and/or international experts
  • Human resource development of staff of the partner organization
  • Contribution to capital investment (although this should be a minor part of the total project)
  • Financial support through a result based incentive system.
Typical IDEAS projects in which SPEED Ghana is engaged last over a period of maximum 2 years and have a financial volume ranging from a few thousand US Dollar up to around one hundred thousand.

Additionally, SPEED Ghana is open for innovative ideas from BDS providers and other organizations that could improve the BDS market. In such cases, the concept should first of all have a potential reach out to a large group of MSMEs that would appreciate and value the new services or products. Furthermore, the concept

  • may also have a reach out to other service providers for MSMEs;
  • would result in innovation for the MSMEs;
  • contribute to improved social conditions within the MSMEs;
  • contribute to economic development of the MSMEs;
  • have a sound (technical) concept;
  • is proposed by a proponent with ample operational capacity;
  • has a sound prospect to be sustainable after the support of SPEED is completed.
