Natural Plant Products

Natural plant products, referring to medicinal plants, spices, essential oils and phytocosmetics among others, can be found in nearly every region of the country and serves as a key source of economic activity for many MSMEs and persons engaged in trade. Both local and international markets for these products are rapidly expanding. The natural plant product industry is one of the non-traditional sectors that offer high income and niche markets for resource limited farmers. The industry in Ghana employs over 15,000 smallholder farmers and collectors and affects more than 200 communities.

SPEED Ghana, in cooperation with the ASNAPP (Agribusiness in Sustainable Natural African Plant Procucts) intends to undertake a BDS market assessment in this sector in Ghana. This will result in the identification of intervention opportunities to further develop the BDS market and by that to develop the enterprises engaged in the natural plant products sector. The following areas are foreseen as specific interest for SPEED Ghana:

  • Enterprise Information Services.
  • Quality assurance, branding and packaging.
  • Strengthening of business association and cooperative networks.
